Saltpond
Saltpond is a town with about 19.000 inhabitants in the Mfantsiman district in the Central Region of Ghana and is located 20 kilometers east of Cape Coast. The inhabitants are mainly employed through fishing, farming and tradings.
The people of Saltpond belong to an Akan tribe, the Fanti. Their tradition says that they originally migrated from Techiman in the interior of Ghana. To honor this event, a lively and colourful "Odambea" festival is celebrated in Saltpond on the last Saturday of August each year.
It offers interesting colonial architecture. Some of the grand houses give away that this must have been an important colonial town. Its well organised avenues, which look remarkably tidy and the friendly population make it an interesting place to stay.
Saltpond played an important role in Ghana''s move toward independence. The United Gold Coast Convention, the original party of Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana later, was formed here on the 4th August 1947.
